Step by Step Brain Tanning the Sioux Way. By Larry Belitz. Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
Brand new 16 page booklet with step by step instructions and easy to follow photographs. This book is a must for anyone interested in making their own hides the Indian way. It is THE book on the subject.
On the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota with a population of 12,000 Oglala Sioux, there are less than 10 women who still Indian tan. None of these women smoke hides any more. A hundred years ago most skins used for daily wear were smoked and the white, unsmoke hides, were saved for special or ceremonial dress. Those who learn to brain-tan the old Sioux way are keepin an old art alive a little longer.
